Biography:
Carl T. Rowan was a prominent and influential journalist, commentator, civil rights leader, and public servant.
He grew up poor in Tennessee and was among the first African-American officers in the U.S. Navy.
After military service during World War II, he made a name for himself as a journalist and editorial writer. During
the Kennedy and Johnson administrations he served in several government positions. Rowan's many
books are important commentaries on race relations in the United States.
