Research Poster Help

Poster sessions in classes and at conferences are a way to visually convey research. We have created a helpful research guide that offers the basics in design, content, and printing resources. Click here to view the research guide.

The guide includes a Printing at Pendergrass checklist to follow when designing and printing your research poster.  Some tips include:

  • Design a poster using a UT research poster template or your own PowerPoint slide. Choose the poster size and correctly resize the slide BEFORE designing. Some common poster sizes are 24″ by 36″ and 36″ by 48″.
  • Save the PowerPoint file as a PDF: File >> Save as >> Save as type >> PDF. Double check the PDF file to make sure it is the correct dimensions: File >> Properties >> Page size.
  • Decide on the type of paper: plain (least expensive), coated, or glossy (most expensive). See our pricing sheet to compare the cost.

This semester, Pendergrass is hosting two Research Posters Workshops on how to design, print, and present your poster. Email credmon1@utk.edu to register for a workshop:

  • March 22, Wed  12-1 p.m.
  • April 11, Tues    3-4 p.m.

Geofacets Database Trial

A trial is underway for Geofacets, a geoscience solution that helps you discover downloadable geologic maps and tables which can be integrated into GIS, Google Earth, PowerPoint, and other software.

The evaluation will be available through April 8 from UT Libraries Database Trials webpage. After the trial, a decision will be made on whether to purchase the database.  Your feedback is welcome!

Geofacets can help find geologic maps and tables quicker and more efficiently, facilitate knowledge growth among students, and accelerate research. Use Geofacets to:

  • Characterize a geologic basin or other geologic element
  • Fill in knowledge gaps about a region or geologic subject area
  • Provide scientific backup for original analyses
  • Integrate published data with proprietary models in a GIS platform

For more information about Geofacets and training videos, visit their learn and support page.

PeerJ Improvements and Reviewer Reward

In keeping with PeerJ’s “What We Believe” statement of values, on January 31 PeerJ announced:

  • increased reviewer reward: To encourage on-time peer reviews of manuscripts, PeerJ has increased review credit to $200, which can be used when the reviewer chooses to submit and publish at PeerJ.  Even if you are not directly invited to review, you can still volunteer via PeerJ’s “reviewer match” program.
  • increased editorial support: PeerJ is adding more editorial staff to make sure that your support emails are answered more quickly, and that Academic Editors and review volunteers get the help they need.

PeerJ’s innovations and affordability support the land-grant mission.  Pendergrass Library has funds to pay for your lifetime membership plan so you can publish in PeerJ. To submit your research:

1. Fill out the Pendergrass Library Form to receive approval for your free membership. We will send you a code that will entitle you to a basic publishing plan.

2. Follow PeerJ’s “How it Works” instructions to sign up for a free account and submit your article to PeerJ or PeerJ PrePrints.
