3D Printing: Reconceptualizing the Scientific Method

This session will provide multiple perspectives on the effect of fostering academic engagement through choice and discuss how a 3D printing project can have unforeseen impacts on equity for traditionally underrepresented students in STEM.
Yolanda Kirkpatrick teaches STEM courses in the Department of Theory and Practice in Teacher Education at the University of Tennessee, and she supervises VolsTeach students and science interns. Dr. Kirkpatrick has a multitude of experiences including work with K-12 and college students in different learning environments, communities, and schools. Dr. Kirkpatrick was a research assistant at Vanderbilt University. She has taught with Project Grad, Upward Bound and Pellissippi State Community College. In addition, Dr. Kirkpatrick served with AmeriCorps and the Children’s Defense Fund Freedom School.

In Polygon Town, there is a population of Polygons consisting of Triangles and Squares. Each Polygon prefers to have neighbors who are similar to them. In this session, participants will be asked to play a game in which they move Triangles and Squares around until everyone is happy. Utilizing fractions and a basic math model, we will explore what happens to Polygon Town in the long run, which leads to a discussion of social science topics in a math setting.
Dr. Anne M. Ho is a Lecturer in the Mathematics Department. She received her Ph.D. and M.S. from Colorado State University as well as her B.A.S. in Math and English from Regis University. Previously, she was working at Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina, where she started a Math Teachers’ Circle program working with local middle and high school teachers. She has been active in student Math Circle programs and other outreach events as well. Her interests include math education, number theory, cryptography, and interdisciplinary research.
All Hands on Math – Building STEM Inquiry Through K-12 Mathematics Modeling Activities

This session will provide hands-on, real world examples of K-12 math activities that bring together multiple concepts and skills through modeling. Participants will engage in the activities and modify them for their classrooms.
Karen Cheng is a former high school math teacher, now pursuing her PhD in mathematics education at the University of Tennessee. Her research interests are in identity development among mathematics teachers and fostering partnerships between schools and communities for STEM programs. She currently works as lead coordinator for the East Tennessee STEM Hub.
Student Thinking in Science and Engineering Using Phenomena K-5

The new TN state science standards show a teaching shift in teaching content for conceptual understanding for students. So how do you develop strong science lessons structures? The answer is through phenomena based teaching. Phenomena teaching will be highlighted during this session and will give you some excellent “look fors” in your science classrooms along with tools to help teachers develop quality lesson that center around student thinking. Join us in science as we highlight the teaching shift to the new science standards.
