Betsey B. Creekmore Special Collections and University Archives, located in Hodges Library, seeks a qualified Student Library Assistant (SLA) to assist researchers, provide access to materials, and process materials.

SLAs working the Reading Room in Special Collections will gain exposure to both public and behind-the-scenes elements of the special collection library/archival field. They work closely with librarians and archivists to make accessible some of the university’s most unique and valuable research collections. Additionally, this position provides you with a convenient, student-oriented job that will offer you skill building opportunities that will carry into future employment.

While schedule is negotiable within our business hours (Summer 10:00-4:00, Tuesday-Friday; Semester 9:00-5:00, Monday-Friday), SLAs must work scheduled desk shifts each week. The ideal applicant will be available this Summer and be able to transition into working the Fall/Spring semesters.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Work assigned shifts on the Special Collections reference desk answering the telephone and paging and monitoring the use of archival material and rare books
  • Ensure that policies are followed by all researchers and correct potentially harmful situations with courtesy and consistency
  • Assist with researcher registration and materials request through the use of Aeon.
  • Shelve rare books after use by researchers
  • Upkeep of communal spaces
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • UT student (undergraduate or graduate)
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Customer service experience
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Comfortable working with computers
  • Must be able to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Must be punctual and reliable

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior library work experience
  • Interest in history or special collections librarianship
  • Prior experience handling rare and fragile materials
