UTK Libraries strive to support our researchers and the open access landscape through a number of investments. The publishers listed below offer varying levels of discounts to UTK researchers.

Note: To take advantage of discounts and waivers listed below, please use your UTK email address when submitting.
American Society for Microbiology
Fees 100% waived on APCs for the following eligible journals:
- Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy
- Applied and Environmental Microbiology
- Infection and Immunity
- Journal of Bacteriology
- Journal of Clinical Microbiology
- Journal of Virology

Association of Computing Machinery (ACM)
- All fully peer-reviewed research articles newly published in ACM's magazines, conference proceedings, and journals are eligible.
- UTK author must be the "corresponding author" to claim the discount.
Cambridge University Press
- Fees 100% waived.
- Eligible journals can be found using the discount checker tool (please note UTK is under “University of Tennessee Knoxville” not “The University of Tennessee”): https://www.cambridge.org/core/services/open-access-policies/waivers-discounts. UTK author must be the “corresponding author” to claim the discount.
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press
- OA publishing fees 100% waived.
- Applicable to four hybrid research journals published by Cold Spring Harbor: Genes & Development, Genome Research, RNA, and Learning & Memory.

De Gruyter
- 100% fees waived.
- UTK author must be the "corresponding author" to claim the discount.
International Water Association
- Fees waived 100%
- Limit of 2 vouchers per year
- Use waiver code HROAAFFUTENN. On the charges estimate page, authors should select the ‘APPLY DISCOUNTS’ button and enter the code in the ‘Promotion campaign discount’ box, then choose apply.
MDPI
- 10% discount on ACPs
- Authors are prompted in the last step of submission to determine if they are eligible for discounts under the open access program. The program is pre-selected if authors use their institutional email address.
Microbiology Society
- 100% coverage of APCs
- Eligibility is determined as part of the submission and publication process using email domain names. Please provide correct affiliation information when submitting a paper.
PeerJ
- Fees waived 100%
- Once you have a peer-reviewed manuscript accepted please return to the UTK institutional PeerJ page to begin verification for funds.
Public Library of Science (PLOS)
- Fees waived 100%
- Full list of eligible journals
- Researchers must be corresponding author to claim benefits. Upon submitting your manuscript to any of the eligible PLOS journals, be sure to list your institutional affiliation in our submission system, Editorial Manager. If your work is accepted for publication, PLOS will check this field and ensure that your benefits are applied to waive or reduce any publication fees.
Sage
- 10% discount
- Must select “University of Tennessee” as affiliate institution during the submission process.
SpringerOpen
- 15% discount
- At point of submission, must select UT for discount. Authors are advised to look for the “APC Agreement” section (or the payment options page) in the initial online submission process. Select the option for “institutional discount,” rather than agreeing to pay the full amount of the article processing charge (APC). If the institutional discount option was not selected upon submission, authors are advised to contact SpringerNature to have the discount applied before their invoice is issued.
Taylor and Francis
- 10% discount
- For hybrid journals only. At point of submission, must select UT for discount

The Company of Biologists
- 100% Waiver

Thomas A. Lyson Center for Civic Agriculture and Food Systems
- Fees waived 100% for the Journal of Agriculture, Food Systems, and Community Development (JAFSCD), published by Thomas A. Lyson Center for Civic Agriculture and Food Systems
- Must include “University of Tennessee-Knoxville” as your affiliated organization during the submission process. When asked about the APC, select “WAIVER OPTION 1: My library subscribes to JAFSCD.”
The Royal Society
- Fees waived 100%
- During the submission process, the corresponding author should state their UTK affiliation, and select the ‘Read & Publish’ option.
