How to Search

TRACE can be searched through either a basic search or by browsing the collections. A basic search, which can be conducted from TRACE’s home page, will find any articles that contain the search terms anywhere in the text. Use the Search TRACE box found on the left-hand menu, enter your search terms, and select “in this repository” to find items within TRACE.

To begin your search, visit TRACE’s Homepage.

Additionally, you may browse TRACE’s many collections by selecting one of the options found under the Browse Research and Scholarship heading. These options are divided by type of scholarly work, and are as follows:

  • Colleges, Departments, Centers & Institutes: This encompasses most of the University of Tennessee Knoxville’s research units, including the university’s academic departments, research centers, and other centers of intellectual output.
  • SelectedWorks Author Gallery: This link accesses the University of Tennessee–Knoxville’s SelectedWorks community, where many faculty members have created pages to provide access their publications.
  • Theses and Dissertations: The university now requires the archiving of all new theses and dissertations, and these can be found here, organized by year.
  • VOL Journals: Volunteer, Open-Access, Library-hosted (VOL) Journals, a service for UT researchers and scholars provided by The University of Tennessee Libraries, can be found here.
  • Conferences: Several conferences utilize TRACE for facilitating events, with features including Calls for Proposals, conference event sites, and maintaining an ongoing repository for conference proceedings. View currently facilitated conferences here.

Visitors simply wishing to browse may use the Collection, Discipline, or Author browsing options available on the left-hand navigation menu.

TRACE also offers an Advanced Search option:

  1. Click the Search button on the left-hand toolbar.
  2. On the next page, select the Advanced search button.
  3. The next page will display the advanced search options available in TRACE. Use the drop-down menus to select what fields you would like searched and then enter your search parameters in the text boxes adjacent to the menus.
  4. If you wish to use additional search terms, simply click the + to the right of the last text field.
  5. After the Search button has been selected the results will be displayed below. You will then have the option to organize the results by year, publication, author, or title.

All the items in TRACE may also be searched by using the UT Library Catalog. To do so, please visit the Library Homepage and use the search options found there.
