Graduate Student Library Assistant – Public Services, Hodges Library

Hours:

Friday & Saturday – 6:00pm-midnight

Monday – 2:00pm-8:00pm (or similar hours)

This GSLA position in the Public Services department deals directly with library customers including students, faculty, staff, and the community. This person must be aware of options for retrieval of information in both print and digital formats. Requires use of several library computer systems, familiarity with organization of the libraries, delivery of materials, research services, and OIT-managed services.

Responsibilities / Duties

This person will be responsible for providing a range of services at the main Public Services Desk and Equipment Desk including:

  • Operating circulation, reserve, and other modules or software for providing customer service
  • Handling patron problems and requests re: user accounts and equipment
  • Handling of the equipment, media collection, physical reserves, and other materials
  • Answering informational and directional questions
  • Providing basic research information in person and by instant-messaging chat service
  • Additional duties as needed

Qualifications

Required
  • Current UTK graduate student
  • Working knowledge of both Windows and Mac computers
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills
  • Customer service experience with a commitment to provide high quality service
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Ability to work with and communicate with diverse patrons
Preferred
  • Experience working in a library setting
  • Some Information Science courses
