MEMENTOS, EPHEMERA, AND NON-PRINT MATERIALS SUBGROUP OUTLINE

PHOTOGRAPH FILE 1944, 1966-1986 (approx. 3000 items, 5.5 cu. ft.)

Description: The great majority of items in this file are 8"x10" black and whites prints but the prints range in size from 3.5 in. square to 8x12 in. Some color prints along with some slides, negatives, positives, and contact sheets are also included in the photograph file (though unless otherwise indicated, folders contain prints). Many are official photos taken by government photographers and include formal, casual, and candid shots but also included are some "snapshots" and other photos taken by amateurs. Some of the folders contain notes, lists, or letters that relate to the photos. Many of the photos are of Baker with constituents, interns, or pages but photos of Baker at meetings, receptions, and giving speeches along with photos that do not include Baker are also included. Quite a few of the photos are file copies; that is, they have photo lab tracking information printed or written over the image. Most of the title and date information was taken from the envelopes used to store the photos in Baker's office. A few photos (primarily snapshots attached to correspondence) can be found in other files throughout the collection. (Though Baker was an avid photographer, his photos are not included in this collection.)

A group of negatives was added to the collection in June 1995 when they were sent to UT by the Senate Archivist. They have been kept in their original negative folders and sleeves because many of these have notes about the photographs on them.

Arrangement: This file is in five groups: black and white, color, large, oversized, and negatives from senate archivist. Each is in chronological order by the date of the photograph, slide, or negative with undated photos at the end of each group. (These photos, except for the box of negatives at the end, were originally in one chronological file but the color and black and white photos have been separated here for preservation reasons.)

FILM AND VIDEO RECORDINGS 1964-1987 (2 cu. ft. - 20 orig. rolls/tapes, 17 copies)

Description: The original film and video tape is in a variety of formats including: 16 mm film, 2" magnetic tape, 3/4" video cassette, Beta video cassette, and VHS video cassette. Included are recordings of interviews, TV programs, campaign and political events, trips, and press conferences. All but three have been copied onto VHS video tape for patron use. (We were not able to copy three rolls of 16mm film covering Baker's USS Coral Sea visit but some of the same events, if not all, are on the video tape of that trip.)

Arrangement: The video tape copies precede the original films and tapes. Each group is arranged chronologically by date of filming/taping.

AUDIO CASSETTE TAPE COPIES 1967-1973,1979-1984 and undated tapes (1 cu. ft. - 66 tapes)

Description: The original audio tapes in the collection have all been copied onto these cassettes for patron use. Several original tapes have been copied onto one copy tape in many cases though occasionally one original tape has required more than one copy cassette. Most of the tapes are of Baker giving speeches or being interviewed about many different topics on a wide variety of occasions. Unless otherwise indicated, Baker is the main speaker on each tape; topics discussed are given in parentheses after the title. The counter number given should be used for approximate beginning locations only since counters vary from tape player to player. (The number in brackets at the end of each tape is a UTK library tracking/identification number.)

Arrangement: Tapes are in chronological order by the earliest dated item on them; totally undated tapes are at the end. Individual items on each tape are not all in chronological order. (For a chronological listing of the items see the "Original Audio Tapes" listing.)

Box 304. Audio Cassette Tapes - Use Copies

ORIGINAL AUDIO TAPES (NOTE: Not for patron use; use copies listed above for viewing or making copies.) 1967-1973,1979-1984 and undated tapes (4 cu. ft. - 138 tapes)

Description: These are the original audio tapes in the collection. Most are reel to reel tapes of various sizes and speeds though the collection also includes radio carts and some cassettes. All have been copied onto cassettes for patron use; see Audio Cassette Tape Copies. The tape number in parentheses is the corresponding cassette that it was copied onto; several originals were sometimes copied onto one cassette and occasionally one original took up two copy cassettes.

Arrangement: Chronological with undated tapes at end.

MICROFILM 1978-1984 (5 cu. ft. - 509 16mm rolls)

Description: The microfilm is in three groups according to the types of records on the film: correspondence, name reports, and topic reports. The Correspondence film is of original correspondence to Baker with the replies from Baker's office or the letter work orders from which the replies were written. The Name and Topic Report film is computer output microfilm (COM, the film is from computer electronic records not from paper records) of the correspondence management system tracking/indexing system: the first by correspondent's name and the second by the topic. The information on the film includes: name, address, type of document, topic, subtopic, date, and document number. The correspondence itself is not on the COM film.

Dates marked with an asterisk (*) are the dates of most of the documents on the film; there usually are some from outside the date range. The dates listed for the Name and Topic Report Film are the dates the COM was produced. All of the microfilm is 16mm comic mode single level blipped film. The microfilm rolls are in their original boxes with their original labels, only the manuscript collection number (MS-2000) and box number has been added.

Arrangement: The microfilm is in three groups: Correspondence, Name Reports, and Topic Reports. The 1978 Correspondence is in alphabetical order and the 1979-81 Correspondence is in document number order. The Name Report film is arranged chronologically by date of filming (and therefore generally chronological by document date) and thereunder, alphabetically by correspondent's name. The Topic Report film is arranged chronologically by date of filming and thereunder, alphabetically by the topic of the correspondence. The topic is often preceded by type of document (issue, case, etc.) but this is not included in the alphabetization.

ELECTRONIC RECORDS MAGNETIC MEDIA (Computer Records) unknown dates and 1978 (.3 cu. ft. - 28 8 in. floppy discs and 16 magnetic IBM cards)

Description: These records are in electronic format on magnetic media: magnetic cards and 8 inch floppy diskettes. No identification or content information is available on the surface of the magnetic cards. The floppy disks apparently are from Baker's 1978 senatorial campaign. (The library does not have computer equipement to read these formats at present; therefore, the condition of the files on them is not known.)

Arrangement: These are grouped by type of media and thereunder are in original order.

MEMENTOS AND EPHEMERA 1964-1984 (12 cu. ft.)

Description: This group includes such things as plaques and certificates, campaign banners and stickers, sample stationery, statues/models, medallions, license plates, and books. Many of these items were given or awarded to Baker although some are examples of gifts from Baker. In cases where there were many duplicate items (such as campaign stickers and paperweights); a sample was retained and the rest were returned to Baker. This series does not reflect any original arrangement. Some of the certificates were originally in frames but most have been removed and rehoused in acid free folders (for preservation reasons). A list of the congressional memorial addresses that were in this collection is at the end of the book listing; they have been removed from this collection and added to the libraries' book stacks.

Arrangement: These are generally grouped by type of object though some may not be with their group due to large size. Items within some groups are in alphabetical or chronological order.
