Diversity notes from June 27, 2002 meeting.
Topics:
Timeline-Diversity committee events
· As of now the Geier Decree Forum Program will be structured with promotional efforts e.g. poster session, Share news, etc. to help people understand the history and background of this significant court case.
o The committee agreed to try and schedule this forum starting around 1 or 1:30 (Jill, please see which time will work best for Marva.)
o After much discussion, based on my understanding, there will be no Diversity lunch connected to this program. The committee agreed to build this forum as an information/ discussion program with a reception to follow.
o If at all possible, we would like for Marva’s introductory remarks recorded excluding staff questions and comments. (Jill, will you ask Marva if there are any handouts of literature that she has available or can make available leading up to this program.)
o The committee also agreed that the best dates to consider for this program would be 8/7 – 8/21.
· The committee was updated on the new dates of August 15-September 15 for the Diversity “Welcome” Display.
o The committee all agreed that these dates would work well for the purpose of our welcoming students and others back to school.
· The committee attempted to discuss the September disability workshops, but no specifics were determined at that time. The committee needs information from Anne to continue discussion. The committee was made aware of Anne’s attempts to set meetings to get the dates and planning under way for these events.
· We agreed that October would be a feasible time to schedule a visit to the Alex Haley farm. Thura will keep the committee updated on this.
· Other events on the timeline will be discussed at our next meeting on July 11.
LAMA Award update
Tamara led a discussion enlightening the committee on the trails of miscommunication surrounding the LAMA award. The good news is we do have the $500 check deposited. Pending budget situations, Barbara may provide financial assistance for our TLA program. Tamara’s name was placed on the award and she has contacted the LAMA office requesting that they reissue the award in Diversity Committee’s name. The LAMA office cited budget woes as a reason that this may be difficult for them to change the names. The committee will move forward and scan in the changes using our own technology to correct this. Tamara asked the committee where we would like to have our LAMA award featured. The committee was so excited that we are still trying to decided where to hang the LAMA award.
Updates from Barbara
Because of an unexpected visit from librarians from Alabama, Barbara was delayed until half way through the meeting. She updated the committee on:
· Her role as member of the ARL Diversity Committee.
· She shared with the committee the dates for the next CIC ARL Diversity Conference which is in 2004. She is trying to get the committee to have the conference in the Southeastern area. Her next step is to find out what the commitments are to hosting such a conference. She will be our liaison for the updates from her committee.
· She congratulated the committee on receiving the LAMA award. She asked Tamara to do a press release for the LAMA grant.
· Barbara would like to invite Anita Grant, a leadership career development participant, to the library to discuss her research project. Barbara thinks that her research has great implications for our diversity efforts.
· Barbara volunteered to attend a July meeting to welcome the new diversity members.
· Barbara would like the committee to develop/ arrange a packet of our best practices for her to distribute at her ARL Diversity committee meeting in October 2002.
Discussions from the Budget Subcommittee were postponed to the next meeting.
Other Business
· Jill reported that July 26 is the date that the TLA Planning subgroup will meet again. She also invited to join the subgroup.
· I will add all new diversity members to the mailing list. Barbara has sent out letters of appointment to the following new members:
o Dianne Meyers, LouAnn Blocker, Troy Davis, Sheila Stephens, and Virginia (Gigi) Horodysky.
· Our next meeting is July 11 in room605 starting at 1:10.
