Online Reserve Meeting 9/28/1999
Present: Bayne, Miller, Robertson, Smith, Blocker, Ferguson, Hinshaw,
Thomas, Durman, Jordan, Roberts
Test scanning is continuing with much success in rendering a small enough
file with fine quality. Based on work today by LouAnn and Anthony, a
five-page document produced a 243k file.
With all variables set, processing time ran at 6-10 minutes for
the entire process.
Standards agreed upon for basic scanning:
*160 DPI, black & white drawing
* Maximum of 5 pages or 300K
* Name files with initial words from the title, using as few words as
possible;
use underscores for spaces that are necessary.
* The Horizon Reserve abbreviation system is sufficient for course names.
If an instructor with the same name happens to teach the same course in
the same department, add an underscore and the first name initial to the
directory name.
* Use lowercase letters for the naming of files and directories in gila.
Site Search may become the search engine for Reserve Wizard. It may be
capable of pulling data from gila and the reserve module. Work remains
to be done
on the Reserve Wizard.
Tamara Miller and Alice Woody have hammered out copyright warnings to be
used in the absence of a copyright statement and one that may be used
along with a scanned copyright statement. They relay a general
copyright policy that states any document copied is subject to copyright
whether the original statement is available or not.
Tamara distributed information that we might put on the web to give
guidelines to faculty and students regarding online reserve and a list of
guidelines for reserve staff. NOTE: Please review this information
and
respond with comments to Tamara (miller@aztec.lib.utk.edu
and
bayne@aztec.lib.utk.edu).
These statements will be the basis for group
discussion at the October 20 meeting.
It was resolved to meet on the first and third Wednesday of every month
beginning October 6,
and then the meeting adjourned.
