Reserve minutes 8/1/00 The Online Reserve Web Site is ready for viewing. Smith conducted a tour of the newly updated and organized Online Reserve Working Group sites for staff and the public Online Reserve site. A map of the site illustrates the various links to Faculty, student and staff information. The new site is commendable. The PDF form is near completion. Erin Holoway in systems is in charge of activating the form. The Staff site is available at: http://www.lib.utk.edu/~reserve/staff/ The Public site is available at: http://www.lib.utk.edu/~reserve/online/ Before presentation to the Library Management Group, the Report on the Reserve Pilot Projects was reviewed for last minute revisions. Bayne made special effort to keep the report concise by employing links to Online Reserve information already in effect. The handouts to Faculty and students will act as appendices to the Report. Smith noted the URL change to the Project's Staff page. Miller urged a rights management database to track permissions as an addition to future investigations. In the process of creating the audio-streamed files, Michelle Brannen created a database of copyright information for every audio item. This information was adapted to the clip that is viewed while the audio files are streamed to the user. Equivalent data is needed for print material in the future. Reserve will keep the paper copies of scanned material just for the fall 2000 semester to avert any unforeseen problems. Bayne intends to edit the document to say "Future Photocopy Disposition". Blocker inquired if LMG would discuss full-text links for online reserve. Bayne responded that some members would want Reserve to use the materials subscribed to by the Libraries. Smith reported that for workflow reasons, it is not yet practical to find full-text links to replace existing reserve materials. Bayne reviewed the practice of accepting links to full text from faculty used at Georgia Tech and that Emory does not use full text links but would like to. It is a matter of efficiency and staff time. Virginia is the only Reserve facility we visited that had the resources to search online sources. Chris Hodge and Brice Bible met with Aubrey Mitchell Friday to discuss the Digital Media Service budget that is under being planned as a campus-wide service. Bayne is hopeful that the new service would be used by us for courses that require high quality scans. Chris Hodge mentioned Mr. Sid and DejaVu as software alternatives for large file material (such as high-quality image files). Mr. Sid is an application used to reduce file size. DejaVu is an application that allows the user to view metadata in the file; it is currently used for Digital Library Project. The use of the file is primarily the issue, according to Bayne. A large file is easy to view online, but is not ideal for printing because it takes a long time to printAfter identifying the users need, material could go to either the Library for digitization or to the Digital Media Service. Roberts questioned the definition of course packs. Miller identified that the cover of a Graphic Creations or Kinko's course material package would indicate who holds the copyright for the material in the course pack. Course notes, for instance, are owned by the faculty member, and could be scanned for online reserve. A compilation/anthology of various articles or book chapters in a course pack are not to be placed on reserve either in-library or as online reserves. Reserve staff with questions regarding copyright should feel free to consult with Tamara. Jordan inquired about publicity about Online Reserve. Miller indicated that a blurb in Context is possible. Other possibilities include UT Libraries News (monthly) and the UT Librarian. Jordan will contact Martha Rudolf for assistance in publishing the information. Smith has requested that the Web Cat page be edited to fit the reserve links at the bottom of the page and center align then with the above search text. Systems will also add a help button that will link to the student information page. Bayne will no longer lead the Online Reserve Group as it moves into its transition phase to a regular online reserve service. Jordan will take the helm in her place. The group adjourned with the intention of meeting once a month. The group will continue to discuss issues via e-mail. MAR |
