Online Reserve Meeting 7/18/2000

Bayne distributed a checklist for fair use, edited from Indiana University (IUPUI). It lists the basic criteria favoring or opposing the fair use of material for educational purposes. The document describes how to use the checklist and where to get more information on the reverse side. An evaluative tool when selecting material for a class, the checklist is a useful addition to the Online Reserve information packet and web pages.  Smith inquired if the checklist was for instructor's personal use. If copyright issues brought litigation, Miller explained this document would support the instructors intent.

Jordan and Atkins met to discuss after hour's use of the ILS Canon scanner. Atkins opened morning hours (8-10:30 am) as well as evening hours (after 5 pm) to Main Reserve staff and student assistants. The Reference department retains a key for after hour's use of the ILS office. Individuals would check out the key, therefore leaving a record of who is using the facility.  Main Reserve can now begin using the Canon in the mornings, after five on weeknights, and weekends.

Miller asked if the process time for online reserves varies from that of traditional photocopy. Jordan has no final data, however his perception is that the time that it takes to process a photocopy is about the same as the time it takes to process an online reserve.

In reviewing the two versions of the PDF reserve request form, the group evaluated in favor of a selection box designating the loan period. The group also decided to eliminate the "official use only" field on the PDF version for a larger "call number" entry location.  This would allow the "call number" more space. The submission of the PDF form is an issue of discussion. Tentatively, the user would receive a choice of reserve locations when they clicked on "click here for address information". Venearo will also explore altering the submit button to link to reserve location choices. It is inevitable that branchs will receive forms for Main Reserve and vise versa.  The group finalized the revised paper form for in-house use only. An edited form is available for the use at each reserve location.

Jordan inquired if reserve processing might require a different barcode than the standard barcode used for other library materials. Because we have decided to create item records for online reserves, we need to use the standard barcodes.  Also, they are purchased in bulk and the Library has a large supply.

Can the URL hot links be enabled in the staff PAC? Jordan requested the implementation of this function. It was resolved to consult Britten on the matter.

Britten is working on the problem of sorting the reserve records in the web PAC. The reserve function in web PAC is a complicated table that retrieves data from several sources.

Main Reserve has resolved to place the (ONLINE) statement at the beginning of the title entry. This will allow all the online material to sort together in the reserve book room, and allow the entry (ONLINE) to stand out in the PAC.
