Digital Reserve Minutes

June 6, 2000

After the June 2 meeting on copyright procedures, a draft copyright policy

was distributed for discussion. The group is to review the new policy and

the instructions to faculty (available online) to detect any needed

editing of either document. The policy, intended for faculty and staff,

may require the addition of examples of appropriate

"permissions" documents, along with a procedures and information sheet.

The most evident revolution is that the libraries will not seek

permissions for reserve materials. All reserve materials will fall under

"fair use". The library will also provide a generic copyright and make

every effort to supply the original copyright statement with each

document. Also noted are exclusions of workbooks, course packs, complete

books, which fall out of reasonable fair use. The group may want to add a

statement on legally obtained copies to the current copyright policy, but

that information is in the faculty instructions.

At this time, it is not profitable to provide a copyright stop page. It

would not be available through the Windows client. The reserve staff will

continue stamping the first page of all reserve material with a copyright

statement.

Smith and Durman are working together on Dr Akin's materials. Dr Wright's

documents contain images that are causing large files. Roberts will

continue to work with Dr. Strange's fish pamphlets to come up with a

viable file size for distribution.

Bayne engaged the group draft to a transition plan for eliminating paper

reserves. She would also like the group to establish a workflow plan in

conjunction with the transition plan.
