Digital Reserve Meeting 5.8.00
Announcements:
Anthony Smith contacted InfoTrack to
inquire if the Libraries could copy
the URL for electronic PDF files in
their database to our Reserve short
bib records and if we could download
the PDF file to our server for
reserve list. InfoTrack consented for
the Libraries to use their
electronic documents and link to the
existing URL's. They assured Smith
that a URL for a specific article
remains constant for an approximate
semester period.
The Music Library is making broad
steps toward eliminating their paper
reserve collection. They are
assessing what courses will need electronic
reserve this fall and seeking
copyright permissions for the requested
article. All faculty members are
required to return reserve requests by
August 1. Music will discard paper
copies of the reserve materials that
are online.
Discussion:
Smith inquired as to what questions
should the UTK Library representatives
ask the digital reserve team at
Georgia and Virginia.
The topics brought were:
Are
they adequately staffed?
What
kind of volume do they receive?
Do
they set a request limit?
How
do they handle copyright?
How
do they weed their expired materials?
Do
they keep any records?
How
do they name their files?
What
format do they prefer?
How
do they communicate with the faculty?
How
do they communicate with the students?
Do
they use OCR (Capture)? And is Capture worth the expense?
Do
they maintain a reserve web site?
Do
they keep the paper copies of digital files?
A copyright stamp is available
through the Adobe custom stamp tool in
Acrobat. Smith has created a stamp
that is available for import from the
digital reserve directory on Castor
in the copyright folder. Detailed
instructions are available from the Digital Reserve staff web page.
Durman, Venearo, and Roberts will
collaborate in instigating a public
digital reserve web page for fall
semester.
