Online Reserve meeting 4.3.00 Print to Digital Reserve
1) Blocker will begin working on copyright permissions with Bayne and Miller. They intend to begin testing, with legal council, blanket authorization. They intend to initiate permissions requests with the help student assistants in Administration, on a trial basis. Primary considerations are how long it will take to get permission and what kind of a reception it will receive from the larger publishing companies. They will start this summer.
2) Smith and Bayne are planning a field trip to one of the large "E Res." facilities using Adobe Capture or where high volume online reserves are happening. The purpose is to explore the process and the staff needed to provide online reserves in a production setting. The trips are to happen in April or May and at least one member of Hodges Reserve will be invited to come along.
3) Smith and Roberts presented an alternate method of file organization on the server and in physical reserve. This is a method that Roberts is testing in AgVetMed. All reading materials associated with the course reside in a primary electronic folder. A single URL attached to the bibliographic record for the online files and the physical copy points to the online folder of course materials. When the URL is clicked the user is presented an alphabetical list of files. A description script added to the server to facilitate the authoring of file descriptions in the file menu for easier file identification. This general practice would alleviate repetitive data entry in the horizon reserve module for electronic reserve materials, but naming files and writing descriptions could prove to be time consuming. Primary keywords are chosen from the title of the article when naming the file. Main reserve is currently using barcodes as file names.
4) All parties are interested in how other institutions are handling their work processes.
5) Smith urges us to visit the staff resource page at: http://libpc330.lib.utk.edu/reserves/ We will discuss the contents at the meeting next month.
