D-Reserves Sample PDF Documents

Sept 2, 1999

The following PDF was created by scanning the original document using the

Black & White (Line Art) setting and scanning at 150 DPI.  This setting

produces PDF files that are about 20K bytes/page.

WOW! Here's a pleasant surprise.  Take a look at the Bledsoe document titled Within the Circle.  This nine-page document was scanned at 300 DPI and occupies 1.44 Mbytes of disk space.  It took less than 3 minutes to Capture this document, rendering searchable text.  The same document after Capture utilizes 258 Kbytes.  I haven't edited the captured version of this document.  Let's all search for mistakes in the character recognition process.

The following scans were conducted for the purpose of testing image variation by adjusting the Black & White Threshold tool that is built into the HP Precision Scan software.  The tool is designed to change the division between black and white pixels within a scanned image.  In other words, Pixels with an intensity smaller than the given threshold become white, and pixels with an intensity greater than the threshold become black.

THRESHOLD RANGE = 0 TO 255

Adobe Photoshop appears to be much more efficient at packaging image files into PDF format.

Files 1 and 2 are the TIFF images that were created by the scan software.

File 1 = 10.7 Megabytes

File 2 = 10.7 Megabytes

File 3 represents both files Captured using Adobe then converted to PDF.  Adobe applies some compression algorithms.

File 3 = 17.3 Megabytes

Files 4 and 5 are PDF files that were created from the two original TIFF files using Adobe Photoshop.

File 4 = 582 Kilobytes

File 5 = 500 Kilobytes

File 6 is both 4 and 5 combined and then captured using Adobe Acrobat.

File 6 = 852 Kilobytes
