To support instruction, study, and research at B.A. and B.S. levels in
Communication Studies.
Subject Description
The program emphasizes study and research in speech communication and
allied fields. Subject areas covered by the department are: public speaking,
interpersonal communication, business and professional speaking, argumentation
and debate, oral interpretation, nonverbal communication, persuasion, rhetorical
theory, linguistics, philology, radio and television broadcasting, organizational
communication, propaganda, freedom of speech, ensemble interpretation, and
communication in conflict.
Overlap with Other Subjects
Speech communication overlaps with psychology, education, political
science, English, business administration, and women's studies.
Languages Collected and Excluded
English is the only language of the collection. Foreign language materials
are excluded.
Geographic Parameters
Publications from the United States are of primary interest; those of Great
Britain and Canada are of secondary interest. Other areas considered only very
selectively.
Chronological Scope
Emphasis is on current research.
Dates of Publication
Current publications are primarily collected; classic texts are collected
selectively.
Retrospective Acquisitions
Retrospective collecting is performed only under special circumstances.
Types of Materials Collected and Excluded
Within this field all material types are considered. Emphasis is on both
general and advanced texts, scholarly monographs, and research publications and
journals.
Formats of Materials Collected and Excluded
Loose-leaf services, computer media, and microforms will be considered as
well as traditional print formats. Audio and visual formats are added
selectively.
Cooperation with Other Libraries
No formal cooperative collection development agreements are in place.
Alternative Access to Resources
Interlibrary loan is a source of materials not in the UT collection.
