General Purpose
To support instruction, study, and research at B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. levels
in Sociology.
Subject Description
The program covers sociological analyses, theories, and methodologies for
the study of cultural and social life with an emphasis on the Appalachain region.
Overlap with Other Subjects
Sociology overlaps with anthropology, ecology, history, interdisciplinary
studies (African-American studies, American studies, urban studies, and women's
studies), philosophy, political science, psychology, religious studies, and
social work.
Languages Collected and Excluded
English is the primary language of the collection. Materials in Western
European languages are selectively added, and African and Asian language
materials are excluded.
Geographic Parameters
Publications covering the United States, Canada and Western Europe are
acquired.
Chronological Scope
Materials covering the twentieth century are primarily added, and works
concerning other time periods are added selectively.
Dates of Publication
Publications from 1900 to the present are primarily collected.
Retrospective Acquisitions
Retrospective collecting is done for classic monographs and back issues of
selected serials.
Types of Materials Collected and Excluded
With the exception of dissertations and textbooks, scholarly publications
of all types are collected.
Formats of Materials Collected and Excluded
There are no restrictions to the format of materials added to the
collection.
Cooperation with Other Libraries
No formal cooperative collection development agreements are in place.
Alternate Access of Resources
Interlibrary loan in a source of materials not in the UT collection.
