CDM Policy Statement - Psychology

General Purpose

To support instruction, study, and research at the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. levels in Psychology.

Subject Description

The general doctoral program emphasizes behavioral medicine and health psychology, child and adolescent development, cognitive and symbolic processes, conditioning and learning, ethology, existential phenomenology, psychometrics, psychophysiology, social psychology, and others.

The clinical psychology doctoral program follows the scientist-practitioner model and produces both researchers and psychotherapy practitioners.

Overlap with Other Subjects

Psychology overlaps with anthropology, human ecology, education, business administration, nursing, social work, sociology, veterinary medicine, and zoology.

Languages Collected and Excluded

English is the primary language of the collection; materials in Western European languages are collected secondarily.

Geographic Parameters

The primary emphasis of the collection is in United States and European materials. Others are collected selectively.

Chronological Scope

Emphasis is on current research.

Dates of Publication

Mainly current publications are acquired for the collection.

Retrospective Acquisitions

Little emphasis is placed on retrospective acquisitions.

Types of Materials Collected and Excluded

Scholarly materials including monographs, journals and serials, some textbooks and reports of scientific and professional associations. Dissertations and self-help publications are normally excluded.

Formats of Materials Collected and Excluded

Primary emphasis is on books, periodicals, microforms, audiovisual materials; other formats are acquired selectively.

Cooperation with Other Libraries

UT Libraries is a longstanding member of the Knoxville Area Health Sciences Library Consortium (KAHSLC). Preston Medical Library of UT Hospital and other KAHSLC participants provide materials in such areas as psychiatry, neuropsychology, behavioral pediatrics and physiological psychology. Collections of the Center for Research Libraries are accessed when needed.

Alternative Access to Resources

Interlibrary loan is a source of materials not in the UT collection.
