CDM Policy Statement - Library and Information Science

General Purpose

To support instruction, study, and research at the Master of Science in Library Science degree level; to support undergraduate and graduate coursework and research in children's literature required by the College of Education, College of Social Work, and the English department; to support the professional literature needs of librarians practicing in the UT Libraries.

Subject Description

The program covers the creation, selection, acquisition, organization, representation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information. Studies and analyses of information and its flow, control, and management by libraries and information agencies are emphasized.

Overlap with Other Subjects

Library and Information Science overlaps with juvenile literature, computer science, management and education.

Languages Collected and Excluded

English is the primary language of the collection. African and Asian languages are excluded.

Geographic Parameters

Publications covering the major industrialized nations are acquired.

Chronological Scope

Materials from all time periods are collected with an emphasis on recent developments.

Dates of Publication

Emphasis on materials issued within the past 10 years.

Retrospective Acquisitions

Highly selective retrospective acquisitions, primarily of standard works.

Types of Materials Collected and Excluded

Scholarly publications of all types are primarily collected. Exceptional textbooks and technical material dealing with infotechnology and telecommunications are added secondarily.

Formats of Materials Collected and Excluded

A variety of formats are collected with an emphasis on print.

Cooperation with Other Libraries

No formal cooperative collection development agreements are in place.

Alternative Access to Resources

In addition to interlibrary loan, public and special libraries throughout the area provide access to materials not in the UT collection.
