CDM Policy Statement - Latin American Studies

General Purpose

To support interdisciplinary study, instruction, and research in Latin American Studies leading to a B.A. or B.S. major or minor concentration under the College of Liberal Arts.

Subject Description

The program covers all matters concerning Latin Americans form general works, to literature, biography, history, the arts and civil rights. The major concentration consists of two optional tracks: 1) General Studies or 2) Brazilian Studies. The General Studies track requires an additional fifteen hours selected from courses offered by at least three different participating departments. The Brazilian Studies track requires in addition a minimum of six hours of study at UT's Summer Study Program in Fortaleza, Brazil, or other approved Brazilian program. Foreign study programs are also available in Spanish-speaking Latin American countries. Certain Latin American Studies courses are available for graduate credit

. Overlap with Other Subjects

Latin American Studies overlaps with romance languages (Spanish and Portuguese), political science, economics, education, history, literature and other social sciences.

Languages Collected and Excluded

Only Portuguese materials are collected for Latin American Studies. Latin American materials in Spanish are collected by the appropriate subject selector.

Geographic Parameters

Only publications from and about Brazil are collected. Preference is given to materials about Upper Amazonian Brazil.

Chronological Scope

Emphasis is on current topics and publications.

Dates of Publication

Current publications are of primary interest.

Retrospective Acquisitions

Retrospective collecting is highly selective.

Types of Materials Collected and Excluded

Primarily scholarly and research publications are collected.

Formats of Materials Collected and Excluded

In addition to print formats, publications of all types are collected, including video and audio tapes. CD-ROMs and microformats are added when appropriate.

Cooperation with Other Libraries

No formal cooperative collection development agreements are in place.

Alternative Access to Resources

Interlibrary loan is a source of materials not in the UT collection.
