General Purpose
The juvenile literature collection supports methods courses in the
departments of Curriculum and Instruction, Art Education, Child and Family
Studies, and the Graduate School of Library and Information Science. In
addition, this collection is to serve as: 1) a depository for the complete works
of selected regional authors, especially Tennessee authors of books for children,
2) a laboratory collection for the Graduate School of Library and Information
Science, 3) a working collection to meet the specific requirements of Human
Ecology's Child Development Lab, and 4) a model collection supporting the
proposed Children's Literature Examination Center.
Subject Description
Primary concentration is on notable books for children in the areas of
fiction, biography, social studies, science, easy fiction and picture books, A
supporting collection includes secondary materials, critical commentaries,
reference sources, and selection aids relevant to children's literature.

Related subject statements include English, special collections, music, and
library and information science.
Languages Collected and Excluded
English is the predominate language, although examples of picture books or
easy reading books in foreign languages may be collected.
Geographic Parameters
Primarily publications of the United States with selected titles from other
areas of the English-speaking world.
Chronological Scope
Represents all periods of development in children's literature. This
includes series books, writing for juvenile audiences from the 18th, 19th and
20th centuries, and a limited number of 19th century adult books which have
become children's favorites.
Dates of Publication
Current publications and out-of-print editions of classic works.
Retrospective Acquisitions
Notable and award-winning titles of the past decade which were not acquired
when published.
Types of Materials Collected and Excluded
Includes only books for children and young adults except in the cases of
selected reference and secondary materials, critical commentaries and other
scholarly publications devoted specifically to the collecting, maintenance, and
use of juvenile materials. Excludes all journals and periodicals aimed at the
juvenile reader.
Formats of Materials Collected and Excluded
Books, journals and videos are collected.
Cooperation with Other Libraries
No formal cooperative collection development agreements are in place.
Alternative Access to Resources
Interlibrary loan is a source of materials not in the UT collection.
