General Purpose
To support instruction, study and research leading to the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels in Geology.
Subject Description
The program emphasizes the following subject areas: economic geology, environmental geology, remote sensing, lunar/planetary geology, Quaternary geology, structural geology, geophysics, geochemistry, stratigraphy, petrology, mineralogy, sedimentology, tectonics, hydrogeology, paleontology, geomorphology, and paleoecology.
Overlap with Other Subjects
Earth and Planetary Sciences overlaps with some of the subjects in the following departments: Geography, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Microbiology, Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Science, Anthropology, and Plant and Soil Sciences.
Languages Collected and Excluded
English is the primary language of the collection. Secondary languages include Western European languages, Chinese, Japanese and Russian, which are acquired selectively depending on research and project needs.

Primary emphasis is on current research.

Current publications are primarily collected.
Retrospective Acquisitions
Older materials are purchased to update the collection in primary areas of research and instruction or to provide basic materials for new programs.

With the exception of textbooks, laboratory manuals and non-local dissertations, scholarly publications of all types are collected.
Formats of Materials Collected and Excluded
Print formats are primarily collected; alternative formats, including electronic media, are added selectively.
Cooperation with Other Libraries
Cooperative agreements are in effect with Vanderbilt University and the University of Kentucky.
Alternative Access to Resources
Interlibrary loan and document delivery are sources of materials not in the UT collection.
