General Purpose
To support instruction, study, and research at B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. levels
in Communications.
Subject Description
The program emphasizes all areas of mass communications which includes
advertising, broadcasting, journalism, and public relations.
Overlap with Other Subjects
Communications overlaps with business administration, electrical
engineering, English, law, marketing, political science, psychology, and
sociology.
Languages Collected and Excluded
English is the primary language of the collection.
Geographic Parameters
Publications from the United States are primarily collected; those of Great
Britain, Canada, and Australia are added secondarily. Other areas are considered
very selectively.
Chronological Scope
Emphasis is on the twentieth century with limited coverage of earlier
periods.
Dates of Publication
Current publications are collected, although classic texts are selectively
acquired.
Retrospective Acquisitions
Retrospective collecting is performed only under special circumstances.
Types of Materials Collected and Excluded
Emphasis is on advanced texts, scholarly monographs, video productions,
research publications and journals.
Formats of Materials Collected and Excluded
All formats are considered for the collection. Strong emphasis is placed
on video, CD-ROM, and computer files.
Cooperation with Other Libraries
No formal cooperative collection development agreements are in place.
Alternative Access to Resources
Interlibrary loan provides access to resources not available in the UT
collection. Also, access to the collections of the UT College of Law Library is
important for the study of communication law.

Other Factors
Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the study of communications, an
active level of consultation and coordination is required with selectors who work
with related areas.
