CDM Policy Statement - Audiology & Speech Pathology

General Purpose

To support instruction, study, and research at B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. levels in Audiology and Speech Pathology.

Subject Description

The program focuses on "the scientific study of human communication sciences and disorders" (Undergraduate Catalog, 1992-93). Preparation of students includes pre-professional undergraduate degrees in the two majors of audiology and speech pathology; a principally clinical Master's degree "designed to satisfy academic and clinical requirements for state licensure, educational (school) certification, and national certification" (Program Review, 1989); and a Ph.D. in Speech and Hearing Science with concentrations in speech and language pathology, audiology, speech science, or hearing science. Doctoral students have "a primary interest in college teaching and research" (Program Review, 1989).

Overlap with Other Subjects

Audiology and Speech Pathology overlaps with special services education, educational psychology, psychology, sociology, biology, child & family studies, physics, biomedicine and engineering.

English is the primary language collected. Other languages are considered selectively.

Geographic Parameters

Publications from English speaking countries are of primary interest. Other areas are considered selectively.

Chronological Scope

Emphasis is on current research.

Dates of Publication

Current publications are of primary concern. Classic titles are acquired selectively.

Retrospective Acquisitions

Low priority; however, exceptions are made for the purchase of journal backfiles and to fill in gaps in the collection.

Types of Materials Collected and Excluded

All types of materials are collected. Publications of the American Speech and Hearing Association receive high priority.

Formats of Materials Collected and Excluded

All formats, including loose-leaf services, computer files, CD-ROM, video, and microforms are collected.

Cooperation with Other Libraries

No formal cooperative collection development agreements are in place.

Alternative Access to Resources

Interlibrary loan is a source of materials not in the UT collection.
