CDM Policy Statement - African and African-American Studies

General Purpose

To support interdisciplinary instruction and research in African and African-American Studies leading to a B.A. or B.S. major or minor concentration under the College of Liberal Arts.

Subject Description

The program covers all matters concerning African and African-Americans from general works to literature, biography, history, the arts, and civil rights.

Overlap with Other Subjects

African and African-American Studies overlaps with sociology, religion, music, women's studies, history and political science, and culture.

Languages Collected and Excluded

English is the primary language of the collection.

Geographic Parameters

Publications from the United States are of primary emphasis; those of Canada and Africa are of secondary emphasis.

Chronological Scope

Emphasis is on current research.

Dates of Publication

Current publications are primarily collected; classic texts are acquired selectively.

Retrospective Acquisitions

Retrospective collecting is of materials dating back to 1900 in order to fill important gaps in the collection.

Types of Materials Collected and Excluded

With the general exception of how-to books, textbooks, theses and dissertations, scholarly publications of all types are collected.

Formats of Materials Collected and Excluded

All formats are considered including print, microform, videotape, film, audiotape, and electronic formats.

Cooperation with Other Libraries

No formal cooperative collection development agreements are in place.

Alternative Access to Resources

Interlibrary loan is a resource to materials not in the UT collection.

Other Factors
