The Writers in the Library series began in 1999, as a venue for students in UT Knoxville's graduate creative writing program to present their works. Since that time, the series has expanded to include readings by students, local authors, musicians, and renowned writers and poets.

Notable readers include Ted Kooser, Elizabeth Gilbert, Charles Wright, Steve Earle, and Yusef Komunyakaa.
