WIL Home || Schedule || View Past Events || Writers in ResidenceThe Writers in the Library series began in 1999, as a venue for students in UT Knoxville's graduate creative writing program to present their works. Since that time, the series has expanded to include readings by students, local authors, musicians, and renowned writers and poets.
Notable readers include Ted Kooser, Elizabeth Gilbert, Charles Wright, Steve Earle, and Yusef Komunyakaa.
The University Libraries is pleased to have Chris Hebert as the current Jack E. Reese Writer in Residence.
Writer in Residence Pamela Schoenewaldt (2001-2003)
Pamela teaches fiction and professional writing at UT as well as a regular course in writing about family for UT's School of Personal and Professional Development. She moved to Knoxville in the summer of 2000 from a small town outside of Naples, Italy, where she had been living for ten years.
Her short stories have been published in Belletrist Review, Bianco e Nero (Italy), Cascando Review (England, winning the Travel Writing Award), Crescent Review (winning the Chekhov Award for Short Fiction), Iron Horse Literary Review, Mediphors, New Millennium Writings, Paris Transcontinental (France), Pinehurst Journal, and Women's Words. Her one-act play in Italian, Espresso Con Mia Madre (Espresso with my mother) was produced at the Theater Cilea in Naples.
While in Italy, Pamela taught English and writing courses for the University of Maryland, European Division, translated, and wrote. She designed and delivered a successful series of seminars using creative writing techniques with non-native English speakers - children, university students, artists, bankers, and doctors. Her theory is that language learners, even at early stages, can express themselves creatively, even powerfully, and this more motivating that the normal yawn of ESL dialogues: "Carmen, would you like to 'hang out' at the park with me?" "Yes, Robert, I would like to 'hang out' at the park with you. Let's go now!"
Pamela lives in Knoxville, TN, with her husband, Maurizio, and daughter Emilia.
