INSPEC is an index covering the areas of physics, electrical engineering, electronics, telecommunications, computers, control technology, and information technology. The SFX at UT links from individual records display electronic and print subscriptions in the UT Libraries, as well as ones not held. In addition to the usual search fields (author, title, subject terms), INSPEC allows searching by Astronomical Object Indexing, Chemical Indexing, Digital Object Identifier, and Numerical Data Indexing. The database also allows searching by Classification Code in order to browse a defined area of research.

The WebSpirs interface is similar to other databases you may have searched at UT, such as Compendex. The basic search allows you to put terms in a box and to limit the search to subject, author, or title, or by publication year. The advanced search allows you to combine terms and to limit to any of the search fields in INSPEC. Using “AND” to combine two terms causes INSPEC to retrieve records containing both of the terms. Using “OR” results in the retrieval of records with either of the terms. Using “NOT” to combine two terms results in the exclusion of records containing the second term.

The Thesaurus helps you identify appropriate subject terms to use in your search. The Index allows you to look at the contents of most of the search fields, in case you are wondering about spelling, or if you wish to browse the Classification Codes.
