University Archives

The University Archives maintains the institutional legacy of the University. We are dedicated to the organization and preservation of University materials, and making these materials available for research.

The University Archives collects and maintains the published works of the University of Tennessee.  This includes the University of Tennessee Press publications, in addition to a wide variety of materials produced by faculty, students, academic departments, administrative offices, campus organizations and the UT Athletic Department.

The University Archives is the repository for the official unpublished records of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.  These historically important materials date from the early nineteenth century and include the papers of UT Presidents, minutes of the Boards of Trustees, records of student organizations, and files from most of the University's academic departments and administrative offices.

Together, these materials document the history and scholarship of the University, by providing researchers with information on alumni, campus life and activities, and local and regional history.

Student and Alumni Information

The University Archives maintains and collects several publications that are useful in locating information about students or alumni.  The University Archives also retains permanent undergraduate student records transferred from the University Registrar, including student information from the 1840s to the 1910s.  The Graduate School also transferred files listing all graduate students from the early 1900s to the 1990s.

University Theses and Dissertations

Dissertations are available in paper format or electronically, depending on date of completion.  Several options for locating a master's thesis or Ph.D dissertation are possible.  More information is available at http://www.lib.utk.edu/refs/dissertations.html

The University Archives retains print copies of all official University Theses and Dissertations dating from the early 1900s to 2004.  The University Archives also has a small collection of uncataloged theses and student papers.  Collections include: College Scholar Projects, 1970-1999; undergraduate engineering theses, 1894-1961; and a collection of early theses 1893-1912.  Title lists for these collections are available.
