Biographical Note: Maria Thompson
Daviess was born in Kentucky in 1872. Her family relocated to Nashville, Tennessee,
after the death of her father. She studied art in college, then traveled in
Europe, turning her focus to miniatures and photography. She returned to the
United States to teach art in 1904, and soon began writing, eventually producing
13 novels and an autobiography. Her interest in women’s suffrage led
her help found movements in both Nashville and in Madison, where she moved
in 1915. She died there in 1924, a year after completing her autobiography,
Seven Times Seven.
