Introduction
"Lion and his Court" from
Anwar-e-Suhaili, 1597 CE

This fourth edition of Asian Art and Culture contains additional bibliographic entries on newly acquired Central, East and South Asian holdings in the University of Tennessee's Special Collections Library. These new entries have been integrated with the three previous editions to provide a concise up-to-date resource.

While the general format of the three previous editions has remained the same, the fourth edition brings with it two changes. First, a new sub-heading has been added to accommodate the numerous books on textiles that have been added to the collection since the third edition. The second change brings the bibliography into the computer age. While the three previous editions were only available on paper, this fourth edition will be available to everyone online. This availability allows the collection to be accessed by a larger audience.

When requesting materials to be paged by library staff, ask for items by the call number. Symbols predeeding the call number should be included: "x" = oversize and "xx" = folio (double oversize). These assist staff members in determining where the item is shelved.

I am greatly indebted to my predecessors Stephen C. Wicks, Kymberly D. Andersen, and Robin M. Ussery for their creation of the first, second, and third editions. Without their efforts my work on the fourth edition would have been very difficult. I would like to thank Dr. Fred Martinson for bringing this project to my attention and for his continuing encouragement. A special thank you to Nick Wyman for his guidance and the entire Special Collections staff for their assistance in completing this fourth edition.
