The
Special Collections Library takes great pleasure in issuing this fourth edition
of the bibliography for Asian art and culture materials found in our collections.
The dedication and enthusiasm that Sara Reid has brought to updating and revising
this guide has been wonderfully gratifying, as with this new edition some
eighty-eight new titles are included: by for the greatest enlargement of this
body of resources thus far. Sara is the fourth student investigator-author,
following Stephen Wicks, Kym Andersen, and Robin Ussery, to take on the challenge
of providing this vital access tool to graduate and undergraduate students
in Asian art history and other Asian Studies disciplines.
Since 1987, when Stephen C. Wicks compiled the first edition, students under
the guidance of Dr. Fred H. Martinson, Professor of Art, have studied topics
in Asian art history, employing this excellent instrument which provides them
access to an array of published and manuscript materials, many of which are
written in Asian languages. Access to so many of these items through
the online catalog is tricky: chance misspellings of transliterations for
Asian language titles and authors' or artists' names can lead a researcher
far astray from the desired records in the electronic environment. This
is why we in the Libraries are genuinely grateful for Professor Martinson's
support and collaborative interest, as well as for the applied insight and
expertise of his advanced students. This bibliography is their contribution
to library services and to the teaching-learning process for other students,
as well as a valuable investigative experience for the compiler, exploring
library materials with a view to describing them as resources for reading
and research. Such collaborative engagement of the Libraries with student
scholars and their mentor faculty is emblematic of a tangible academic community.
An so, on behalf of the Special Collections Library, I offer sincere thanks
to Stephen, Kymberley, Robin and Sara for their genuine and lasting contribution
to the study of Asian art and culture at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
