Understanding Library of Congress (LC) Call Numbers

  1. The UT Libraries use the Library of Congress call number system, an alphabetical arrangement of books by initial letters. e.g.:

--Alphabetical order (single letters precede double letters)

    D 271 .H78
    DA 28 .M29
    DB 805 .C721
    DC 62 .L5

  2. Within a given alphabetical group (or classification), books are sub-arranged by numerical order. e.g.:

    --Numerical order (whole numbers)

    DA 28 .M9
    DA 79 .G24
    DA 289 .A5
    DA 2813 .B29

  3. Books are further sub-arranged by the next set of letters and numbers. This number is preceded by a decimal. e.g.:

    --Decimal numbers DA 289 .K21
    DA 289 >L513
    DA 289 .L8
    DA 289 .M37
