Biography:
William Robert Anderson, US Navy Captian of the USS Nautilus
and Congressman, graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1942. Anderson
recieved the Bronze Star and other combat awards for Pacific Island
submarine patrols during World War II. The USS Nautilus, the
first atomic-powered submarine, gained fame when it crossed the geographic
North Pole travelling through the ice-blocked Arctic, in August 1958.
Retiring from the military in 1962, Anderson ran for governor of Tennessee.He
was elected representative of Tennessee's Sixth District in 1964, beginning
his congressional career. Anderson served four consecutive terms in
Congress, where he opposed the US involvement in Vietnam, and criticized
J. Edgar Hoover. He retired from Congress in 1972, after losing the
election.
