Collections

The UT Libraries offers a wide variety of print and digital resources. Anyone may access our electronic resources from a library computer. Off-campus access is governed by licensing agreements and restricted to UT (Knoxville campus) faculty, staff, and students.

Catalog
The catalog provides information about resources available via the UT Libraries. Materials include books, journals, non-print media, maps, government documents, and digital collections.

Databases/Indexes
The term "databases" is used by the library to identify online-searchable indexes to articles on specific topics, collections of full-text journals and books, compilations of statistics and corporate financial data, and image archives, to name a few. The library subscribes to numerous databases for use on and off-campus by authenticated users. Metasearch is a new tool that allows you to search up to eight databases, library catalogs, and other resources at one time.

Digital Collections
The Digital Library Center (DLC) provides unique and valuable digital collections to support research and teaching. Digital collections created by the UT Libraries DLC are freely accessible to all.

E-journals
Links to journals available online are provided in the UT Libraries E-journals list. Many journals with electronic access are listed in the UT Libraries' catalog, as well. Some databases provide a link to articles in journals through the button in the database record.

E-books
Electronic book collections may focus on a specific area such as chemistry or literature or be more general and cover a variety of subject areas, such as NetLibrary. Links to NetLibrary titles are included in the Libraries' catalog.

New Books
New books are displayed for one week on the shelves directly across from the circulation desk on the second floor of Hodges Library. Contact your subject librarian or use the online form to recommend purchases for the libraries' collections.

Subject Guides
Librarians regularly maintain lists on the libraries' website called "subject guides." These are organized by broad topic area and provide information on useful, high quality digital and print resources. Many of the links on the subject guides are to websites, but some guides also incorporate lists of recommended books and databases. A librarian's subject guide can be an excellent starting point. The Reference Department also maintains a select list of useful reference web resources organized by type of information, i.e. style guides, careers and employment, financial aid, dictionaries, and much more.

Internet Search Engines
Services such as Google and AltaVista canvass the web and create indexes of the pages found. Unlike the subject guides noted above, search engines are not designed to filter for quality. The UT Libraries provide a convenient access point to several well-known search engines.

Other Libraries
Find out about other libraries and search their catalogs via this listing of links to local libraries and collections of interest to the University community.
