A Research Guide to Newspapers

Newspaper Databases (both Full Text and Indexes - UT Access Only)

  • AP Images (AccuNet/AP Multimedia Archive) (UT only)
  • An extensive database of photographs and other graphic images from the Associated Press. Currently the database contains over 750,000 images and over 500,00 audio-clips. Some of the historical images date back to the 1840's. The 800,000 news text files date from January 1997.

  • Alternative Press Index 1991- (UT only)
  • Indexes nearly 300 alternative, radical, and left periodicals, newspapers, and magazines. Is not Full Text.

  • Alternative Press Index Archive (UT only)
  • Indexes alternative, radical and left periodicals, newspapers and magazines from 1969-1990.

  • America's Newspapers (Tennessee Subset) (UT only)
  • Full text of selected newspapers in Tennessee. Years of coverage varies. Papers include Commercial Appeal (Memphis, 1990-), Chattanoog Times-Free Press (2006--), Knoxville News-Sentinel(1991-), Claiborne Progress (Tazewell, 2005-), Daily Times (Maryville,1997-),(Macon County Times (La Fayette, 2005-), Oak Ridger (1997).

  • Ethnic NewsWatch (UT only)
  • A full text collection of more than 270 newspapers, magazines, and journals of the ethnic, minority, and native press. Contains both English-language and Spanish language publications and can be searched in either language.

  • Factiva (UT only)
  • Provides the full text searching of leading newspapers, including the Wall Street Journal (1984-current). Includes newswires and television and radio transcripts. Useful for international news, can search by region of the world as well as source.

  • LexisNexis Academic (UT only)
  • Includes U.S. and international newspapers, magazines and wire services. Of particular interest are the New York Times (June, 1980 - date; the Chattanooga Free Press (1995-), Commercial Appeal (1990-), Knoxville News-Sentinel (1994-). Some papers have rolling back files and will not have the current issue.

  • National Newspaper Index 1996- (UT only)
  • Provides indexing for five U.S. daily newspapers: The New York Times (Late and National Editions), The Wall Street Journal (Eastern and Western Editions), The Christian Science Monitor (National Edition), The Washington Post (Final Edition), and the Los Angeles Times (Home Edition).

  • New York Times, Historical Newspapers 1851-2003 (UT only)
  • Digitally scanned full-text backfiles of the New York Times. Searchable fields include document types such as obituaries, birth notices, marriage, classified ads, editorials, illustrations, and reviews.

  • Press Display - Current + 60 days (UT only)
  • Access to over 250 newspapers from 50 countries in 30 languages. In full-page image format.

  • Times Digital Archive - 1785-1985 (UT only)
  • Digitized edition of the The Times (London), "the world's newspaper of record". The entire newspaper is captured, with all articles, advertisements and illustrations/photos divided into categories to facilitate searching.
