Literature

  • The Concise Oxford Dictionary of French Literature
    Reference PQ41.C6 1976
  • This is an abridged and revised version of The Oxford Companion to French Literature , first published in 1959 (Hodges Stacks PQ41.H3). Entries are included for obscure writers as well as major figures.

  • A Critical Bibliography of French Literature, 6 vols.
    Reference PQ103.C75 1947
  • Each of the six volumes is written by specialists in the field and treats a different time period: medieval, sixteenth century, seventeenth century, eighteenth century, nineteenth century, and twentieth century. The series (1947-1994) represents a selective, evaluative, and annotated bibliography of books, dissertations, and periodical articles with references to reviews. Each volume is separately indexed.

  • The essays in this series provide detailed coverage of writers' careers and literary styles and influences. Volumes covering French authors include:

  • Dictionary of Modern French Literature: From the Age of Reason Through Realism

  • This work is a detailed and thorough dictionary of French literature of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries from 1715 to 1880. All major writers and many minor figures of the period are included. Literary movements and individual works are identified and described. Biographical entries are included, and bibliographies accompany most entries.

  • Dictionnaire des Litteratures de Langue Francaise, 4 vols.

  • This title covers French literature from the 9 th century to the present, with over 2,300 signed articles on authors, anonymous works, literary reviews, and French-language literatures of other countries. Entries on major authors are very comprehensive, including a survey of life and works, critical commentary, plot synopses of key works, and a bibliography.

  • Dictionnaire des Oeuvres Litteraires de Langue Francaise , 4 vols.
    Reference PQ41.B42 1994
  • The arrangement of this dictionary is alphabetical by title of work. Long signed essays focus mostly on French national writers but includes some other European French-language writers. The entries set the work's first appearance in context and provide a synopsis, critical analysis, and details of available editions, but no references to secondary sources. An author index is included.

  • French 17: An Annual Descriptive Bibliography of French 17th Century Studies (1964 to the present)

  • This annual work lists books and articles in 5 sections: bibliography, linguistics and history of the book; artistic, political and social background; philosophy, science and religion; literary history and criticism; authors and personages. Brief annotations and citations to reviews are provided. Since 1981, it has included details of research in progress.

  • French XX Bibliography: Critical and Biographical References for the Study of French Literature Since 1885 (1949 to the present)

  • An unannotated bibliography of books and articles, covering general subjects in a classified arrangement, author-subjects, and cinema. Included are references to reviews of books, plays and film. Indexes of critics and of authors as subjects are provided.

  • Guide to French Poetry Explication
    Reference PQ401.C65 1993
  • The purpose of this guide is to lead the user to published explications of poetry by major poets. The poetry dates from the Middle Ages to the present, and explications were written between 1960 and 1990. The entries are alphabetical by name of poet. An index of critics and several bibliographies complete the work.

  • The New Oxford Companion to Literature in French
    Reference PQ41.N48 1995
  • This work covers various literatures in the French language rather than just the literature of France. Included are some 3,000 entries treating a variety of topics pertinent to literary development. Broad survey articles on the literature of each geographic area, such as "Haiti" and "Quebec," and on literary and intellectual movements are included. The survey articles contain excellent bibliographies.
