On March 31 and April 1, 2006, the University of Tennessee sponsored an inter-disciplinary, intercultural conference about the changing demographics of our state and about the new opportunities and challenges posed for receiving communities by the arrival of newcomers from Latin America.

Read a review of the conference from Charlene Helmuth in AmeriQuests, Volume 2, No. 1, 2005.

Attendees:

  • Faculty and students from UTK and other colleges and universities in the area
  • Local professionals whose practices are affected by the new immigration
  • Members of the wider community in Knoxville and East Tennessee

Focus on:
Latina/Latino immigration to Tennessee and to other "new destination" locations, such as the traditionally non-Latino Southeast and small-town/rural areas in the Midwest.

Issues to discuss and questions we will ask:

  • Impacts on receiving communities
  • Impacts on sending communities
  • What professionals in Tennessee need to know to perform competently and ethically in this new environment
  • Policy questions and justice issues we all face as a result of these new developments
Distinguished keynote speakers:

Dr. Alejandro Portes, Professor of Sociology and Director of the Center for Migration and Development at Princeton University

Dr. Raúl Delgado Wise, Director of the Doctoral Program in Migration Studies at the Autonomous University of Zacatecas, Mexico.
