Continuing Education Opportunities

As part of the conference, five co-sponsoring professional schools and Colleges - the College of Education, Health and Human Sciences, the College of Law, the College of Nursing, the School of Information Sciences and the School of Journalism and Electronic Media - each offered a continuing education segment for members of their respective professions. Break-out sessions were provided by:
College of Education, Health and Human Science - http://cehhs.utk.edu/
Department of Theory & Practice in Teacher Education - http://web.utk.edu/~tpte/
Sessions of special interest to educators
College of Law - http://www.law.utk.edu/
Sessions of special interest to lawyers
College of Nursing - http://nightingale.con.utk.edu/
Sessions of special interest to nurses
School of Information Sciences - Latino Immigration Events
Sessions of special interest to librarians and information scientists
School of Journalism and Electronic Media - http://www.cci.utk.edu/~jem/
Sessions of special interest to journalists
This conference will be a place where academic researchers and practicing professionals can exchange ideas, share experiences, and learn directly from other members of the community about what the new immigration realities mean for our state and its people. It will also be a place where certain professions can meet separately to take up issues specific to their fields. Much of the conference will qualify for continuing-education credit for those professions where such credits are a concern.

General conference sessions

Some conference sessions will be mixed gatherings that provide a chance for people from many fields and backgrounds to hear from and about each other. For instance, Friday afternoon sessions will be devoted to keynote addresses and panels where research of general interest will be shared across disciplines. Likewise, on Friday evening, all conference participants are invited to the screening of a work-in-progress by a prize-winning filmmaker who is documenting impacts of globalization on East Tennessee. Again on Saturday morning, all attendees will hear from a multi-disciplinary panel of practitioners -- an educator, a journalist, a lawyer, a librarian, and a nurse. They will describe challenges and opportunities presented to their respective professions by Latino immigration to "new destination" locations like Tennessee.

Profession-specific sessions

Some conference sessions, on the other hand, will focus specifically on designated professions. Attendance at those sessions is open to anyone who wants to attend, regardless of profession. However, in the event a session is oversubscribed, attendees who have registered for continuing education credits and have paid the associated additional fee, will be given preference.
