Barclay-McGlaughlin Gina Barclay-McLaughlin is an associate professor in the College of Education, Health, and Human Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

She was born in Panama City, Panama and later migrated to the United States with her family.

Dr. Barclay-McLaughlin's personal experiences negotiating and adjusting to life in a new country and her interest in ethnography with a focus on child development, education, and the contexts that influence them uniquely contribute to her insider-outsider perspective on issues related to immigration. Over the years, she has integrated theory and practice in support of her interest in child development, education, and the dynamics of race and class. She is particularly interested in understanding the meanings immigrant families attach to their experiences and implications their meanings suggest for research and public policy.

Dr. Barclay-McLaughlin is a graduate of Southern Illinois University where she earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education (1965) and a master's degree in educational psychology (1968). She earned a master's in psychology (1993) and a Ph.D. (1995) from the University of Michigan in the Combined Program of Education and Psychology. Dr. McLaughlin has also studied in Universities and Institutes in Ghana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Costa Rica.
