U.S. Patent and Trademark Searching on the Web
"A patent for an invention is the grant of a property right to the inventor, issued by the Patent and Trademark Office." ... "A trademark is a word, name, symbol or device which is used in trade with goods to indicate the source of the goods and to distinguish them from the goods of others. A servicemark is the same as a trademark except that it identifies and distinguishes the source of a service rather than a product." (USPTO)
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (http://www.uspto.gov) provides no-cost searching of Issued Patents, Patent Applications, and Trademarks:
- Patents issued between 1790 and 1975 may be searched by Patent Number and Current US Classification (the classification code assigneed to the patent to indicate its subject matter).
- You may search patents issued since 1976 using any of the sections (fields) within the full-text documents.
- Patent Applications are available since March 15, 2001.
- The Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS) allows you to search trademarks. Active trademarks and trademark applications, as well as inactive ones since 1984, are included.
