The Oak Ridge National Laboratory Research Library has a collection of approximately 175,000 paper technical reports dating from the 1940s.The library also has over a million reports on microfiche and microcard. There are a wide variety of scientific and technical reports from many U.S. government research organizations including Oak Ridge National Laboratory and some from Canada and the United Kingdom. Publishers include the national laboratories, the Department of Energy, the Electric Power Research Institute (up to 1998), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Since both limited and unlimited reports are housed together report retrieval is made by library staff.

Determining which Reports are Included

Reports since the early 1980s have been listed in the ORNL Library catalog at http://libcat.ornl.gov/F/. Users should login as guests.

Reports originating from ORNL since 1985 may be searched in the ORNL Publications Database at http://lib1.isd.ornl.gov:8182/TSEARCH/BASIS/tidd/fqma/tpsext/SF. Many reports since the 1990s are available online.

Because reports before the 1980s may not be listed in these sources, publicly available databases must be consulted to obtain a report number. With a report number the collection can be queried for availability.

• Energy Citations Database (http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/) provides bibliographic access to DOE research since 1948. Use the advanced search and specify as Resource/Doc Type “Technical Report.”
• Information Bridge (http://www.osti.gov/energycitations/) provides full-text technical reports from DOE from 1995 forward. Use the advanced search and specify as Resource/Doc Type “Technical Report.”

Access to Reports
