Dissertations at the UT Libraries
How Do I Locate a Dissertation?
Dissertations completed at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, are available in paper format or electronically, depending of date of completion. Several options for locating a master's thesis or Ph.D dissertation are possible:
- For paper copies of UT doctoral dissertations and master's theses from early years to the present, search the UT Libraries catalog. Both dissertations and theses are listed in the library catalog by AUTHOR and by TITLE. They are also listed by the college or department in which the degrees were completed. Subject indexing is very limited. For help, consult the search tips.
- Electronic copies of Ph.D dissertations completed at UT from 1997 to the present are available through Proquest's Dissertations & Theses database. Access to full text of the dissertation is limited to UT faculty, staff, and students; others may preview selected pages and have the option to purchase full text.
- From 1999 on, electronic access to the full text of a growing number of UT master's theses and Ph.D dissertations is available to all users through the UT Electronic Theses/Dissertations (ETD) website. An index by author, department, and subject is also available. These electronic theses and dissertations are also listed and linked in the UT Libraries catalog.
- Dissertations from 1861 to the present completed at over 1000 institutions worldwide are listed in Dissertation Abstracts. Access to this database is limited to UT faculty, staff, and students. No full text, but abstracts from 1980 to the present are available.
