"The AFI Catalog Silent Film Web site contains over 25,000 entries for silent American films from the years 1893-1930. Entries for silent films produced after 1911 are for feature-length films only. Detailed information on cast, crew, plot summaries, subjects, genres and historical notes are included for each film. In many cases, entries from previously published catalogs have been updated and augmented with additional information."
Although considered a “work in progress,” a key resource for identifying films. Entries include credits, distributors, release data, rights information, length and country of origin. Covers popular American films.
A great introduction to the American Independent Film movement. Most films were reviewed by Levy in Variety and, perhaps arbitrarily, begins the chronicle of films in 1977 (of course not leaving out Waters’s Pink Flamingos (1972)). There is a useful Filmography organized by title and by year in the appendices. Also, Film Quarterly’s special feature issue (Vol29 No. 3, Spring 1976, is devoted to Independent Cinema).
Covers the period from 1928-1998 and indexes 12,862 British sound films.
A “consumer-based” guide concentrating on films that are available in the home video market. Facet’s online catalog is available at http://www.facets.org.
Alphabetically arranged entries of films. Included is year of release, production company, country of origin, running time, leading cast members, and production credits. Also includes a description of the film, a review and an “evaluation.” Does not include documentary, experimental or pornographic films.
Arranged alphabetically by film title. Entries include release date, MPAA rating, credits, brief summaries and plots and an evaluative commentary.
“This guide is intended as a directory to help U.S. viewers become with familiar with the quality and quantity of works produced in Latin America, the Caribbean, and the Latino diaspora to facilitate learning from and about their diverse cultures and communities.” Continued via the Latin American Video Archive at http://www.lavavideo.org.
