In a rather celebratory tone, aims to "provide information, perspective, and insight into historical, technical, aesthetic, practical, fiscal, and critical aspects of independent filmmaking" in the twentieth century. The release of Soderbergh's sex, lies and videotapes (1989) is taken as the "reference point for the modern era of independent filmmaking."

Aims to be “the most comprehensive one-volume encyclopedia of world cinema ever published in the English language.” Definitely an awesome resource.
Covers the “international history of film, mainly as an art, but also as an industry…” (9) Over 1,000 entries. Note: Does not cover the technologies of film production or soundrecording. The introduction is useful as a snapshot of the history of cinema (up to 1972).
Constitutes, in 13 volumes, “a reprint collection of facsimile articles that appeared in the New York Times” between 1896-1979. A searchable electronic version of the New York Times can be accessed here.
Over 250 entries on major filmmakers and films. International in scope. Each entry consists of a biography, complete filmography, selected bibliography and an expository essay.
