James Mooney,
1861-1921, was a self-trained anthropologist who was passionately interested
in American Indians. Through his research, he became the leading authority
on the Cherokee in his time. Under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution’s
Bureau of Ethnology, he made several trips to the Qualla Boundary, visiting
with the Cherokee, learning their language, and studying their culture. Mooney
published many articles on the Cherokee, some of which are provided in full-text
