Beilstein News
Beilstein is now available through our new
DiscoveryGate subscription.
IE or Safari are the recommended browsers. You will be prompted to download a Java applet in order
to use the database (a quick and easy download). I'm still working on some of the web site
configuration details, but I would appreciate any comments as you begin to use DiscoveryGate.
IMPORTANT! If you continue to use Crossfire Commander,
you will need to modify your client host settings by the end of January. To change your client
settings
- Open Crossfire Commander.
- Click on Options/Define Server Profiles.
- Click on Edit.
- Enter crossfire-acad.mdl.com in the host address.
- Be sure the Forget User ID/Password box is unchecked (else you will asked for the password
the next time you log in).
SciFinder Scholar Update
The SciFinder Scholar 2006 version for Mac OS X is here with the same
features
as the PC version. If you haven't done so already,
download SciFinder Scholar
2006. Mac installation works best with Safari.
For those of you who use Linux, I have discovered some information on the
MIT
Libraries web site that may be useful. However, I have not tried this solution,
and MIT does not support it, but I leave it to your judgement.
SciFinder Scholar is still not accessible off-campus because it is not compatible with
our proxy server. VPN is not an option because using UT's VPN network, which includes the
other UT campuses, would violate our license agreement. We are continuing to work towards
a solution. Thank you for your patience.
Web of Science Update
Web of Science has undergone some changes and added a few new features.
- Topic Search Changed
If you want to search for an exact phrase in a topic search, you now need to enclose the phrase
in quotation marks. If
you omit the quotation marks, the database will retrieve records that contain
the words you entered in any order and in any position.
- RSS Feeds
You can now set up RSS feeds for citation alerts and saved search alerts.
- EndNote Web
You have access to EndNote Web if you have set up a personal account in the Web of Science
interface. However, let me warn you that EndNote Web uses one of
the limited number of seats we have for Web of Science, so there may be access issues if many
people use it as their primary bibliographic management tool.
For more information, see the
Thomson web site or
view a
presentation.
- See SciTech News @ UT
Libraries for information about Web of Science's new citation report and authorship tools.
New Subscriptions
These new titles are still being processed and are not yet available, but keep an eye out for them.
- DiscoveryGate
I mentioned DiscoveryGate before in relation to Beilstein, but we will purchase the
entire
package, which will include Gmelin, ORGSYN, Comprehensive Organic Functional Group
Transformations, and a lot more.
- Journal of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (print only)
- Nature Chemical Biology
- Nature Physics
- Wiley Database of Polymer Properties
Photocopying in Hodges Library
If you haven't been in Hodges Library for a while, you may not be aware of
the new photocopier payment methods. There are no coin-operated photocopiers in Hodges.
You can use copycards or AllStar accounts. All UT faculty, staff, and students
automatically have
an AllStar account. The advantage of using AllStar is that the money can be used for more than
photocopying (e.g., UT Bookstore, Dining, printing). The easiest way to put a small amount of
money on the account is to feed some dollar bills into Debit Access Retail Terminal (DART)
machines located in the University Center and The Commons. You can also use a credit card
to deposit money online. For more information, see the
VolCard Office.
