The Center for Children's and Young Adult Literature was created
through the cooperative efforts of the University of Tennessee Libraries, the
School of Information Sciences, the
College of Education, Health, and
Human Services, the Knox
County Schools and the Knox County Public
Library.
The Center is located on the third floor of Hodges Library, 1015
Volunteer Boulevard, Knoxville, Tennessee 37966. (When you step off
the elevator, turn right and follow the signs.) It is open the
regular Library hours.
The Center works to promote the use
of literature in the education and lives of children and young adults by
providing workshops for teachers and librarians, and sponsoring talks by
authors and illustrators which are open to the public.
Publishers of children's and young adult books have agreed to place
review copies of their most recently published books in the Center, where
they will be displayed for a period of eighteen months. These books are
available for study within the Center by librarians, students, teachers
and the public.
The Center held its inaugural event
in March 1999, which featured author Suzanne Fisher Staples as the guest
speaker. Since then, the Center's outreach program has served the
community with both educational workshops and entertaining events.
Speakers sponsored by the Center for Children's and Young Adult Literature
have included such children's favorites as Jack Gantos, Emily Arnold
McCully and Robert Sabuda.
