The sources below are geared toward a general, non-technical audience. This guide is useful for finding information for an informative or persuasive speech or a brief, non-technical paper on hot topics in science.

 

Sources for finding journal/magazine articles and reports

CQ Researcher
Current and controversial issues with summaries, pro/con statements, tables & graphs, and lists of further reading. A great resource for informative or persuasive speeches or brief papers.

Academic Search Premiere
A multidisciplinary database that provides access to more than 3,000 journals, as well as magazines and newspapers. After searching for your topic, you can limit to magazines, academic journals or newspapers.

 

Newspaper Articles

Factiva
A full-text database of more than 8000 newspapers and transcripts of television stations including CNN, NPR, BBC, NBC, FOX, ABC, MSNBC and others.

Lexis Nexis Academic
A database of full-text newspaper articles, magazine articles, television transcripts.

 

Encyclopedias & Dictionaries

Reading about your topic in a specialized encyclopedia, dictionary, or handbook may be one of the most effective and time saving research tips. These resources can help you define unfamiliar terms, understand the parameters of current debate in a particular area and provide you with a preliminary bibliography on the subject. Provides specialized reports on current topics such as global warming, stem cell research, genetic engineering and more.

An electronic, full-text collection of:

Reference Universe
A database that searches the indexes of thousands of encyclopedias and dictionaries. Use this tool to find which sources include your topic. A direct link will bring you into the library catalog where you can find the call number.
